In an earlier post I told you about criticisms of Kent Williams’ acceptance of a campaign donation from House Democratic Caucus Assistant Majority Leader, John Litz. This week, Williams responded in an issue of the Elizabethton Star.
Williams said, “Rep. John Litz and I have become good friends. The party affiliation has nothing to do with it. He is first a farmer and then a legislator. I also farm some. He has been very appreciative of my work with Agricultural Commissioner Ken Givens on some farm issues.”
Well, isn’t that sweet.
At first I found his excuse somewhat convincing, as I’m sure a lot of people will. Then I considered, however, my friends who have drastically different political views than I do. I thought to myself, would I accept a campaign donation from my liberal friends? Probably.
Then I thought further. Would I donate money to a friend of mine from the other side of the aisle? Absolutely not – not unless they weren’t really on the other side of the aisle. I have some good friends – people that I love talking with and with whom I have lots in common other than political views – that I would never, ever, want elected to public office. Why? Because I am so vehemently opposed to their political world views. Friendship has nothing to do with it. I’m “friends” with David Davis, and I’m sure we agree on some issues, but I’m not going to vote for him much less give money to his campaign…so what gives?
It’s possible that this says less about Kent Williams than it does about John Litz. Maybe Litz is a political weenie who doesn’t really care about the issues about which he says he cares, and would therefore donate money to get a political “rival” elected.
Given Williams’ record, however, (opposing pro-life and second amendment legislation, voting for House Speaker Naifeh, etc.) my guess is that Litz was giving money to a buddy with similar political views.

[...] Jama Oliver isn’t buying Rep. Do you remember what happened in North Carolina back in ‘02? The GOP won a razor thin majority that year…I think it was 61-59 in the State House. Anyway a group of five or so liberal to moderate GOPers broke off and formed a coalition with the democrats. Thanks to those liberal to moderate GOPers, the democrats stayed in power despite the voters clearly saying they wanted the GOP to run the State House. Im afraid thats what Kent Williams and the other four or five Naifeh GOPers will do if the GOP wins 50 seats in November. It would be an outright shame if they did that but when you hear the way Kent W talks it wouldnt shock me if they pulled a stunt like that.

I am so sick of partisan politics I can’t stand it!!

Jama are you aware that David Davis voted twice for Naifeh and Ron Ramsey voted once for Wilder i guess they are really pro-choice, anti gun liberal democrats too. I am just saying if thats the argument towards Kent should it not apply to them as well?

Ryan,
This is all Jama can come up with on Kent Williams.
Forget all of the transportation projects. That doesn’t count.

Hey Jama:
Hello — anyone? Perhaps you can answer this question: why isn’t Rep. Jason Mumpower listing his wife (the former Sundquist secretary, Nancy Alicia Point) on his official Tennessee House of Representatives biography web page?

Elmer,
Come on. Jason openly admits he doesn’t want kids and he doesn’t care enough to update his stuff to include his wife? Why even get married but for a family? I smell a trap.

People are so jealous that Kent can work with both parties to get things accomplished in Carter county.I think it’s great we have a Representive that can and will do that. Besides Jama what does it matter to you anyway? he isn’t your representive. Stick with Mr. Hillypo. I’m sure he will serve you just fine. Keep your nose where it belongs, and that sure isn’t carter County.

Jama,
Newsflash!!! Terrorists are using street signs as a way to destroy us! Thankfully KW got two bills passed this session… KW would grab a copy of the Republican Party meeting agenda, run out the door, and visit Boss Hog to give him this highly classified information so that he could pass two important bills to get road names changed.

kent williams is no more a democrat than i am . any legislator who would not accept a gift from a friend regardless of their being a demorcat or a republican would be brain dead like mr. cochran. he did nothing for 4 years but delay the progress of carter county at least 10 years. people who support mr. cochran have to have a real problem in telling the difference between fact and fictionl may god help carter county if jerome is elected again.

No way Cochran will win this election. Being voted pit the last time, who would want him again? Kent will win no doubt about that.
