I had the distinct pleasure of attending Matthew Hill’s reelection hootenanny (and it was quite a hootenanny!) this evening. Located at the Cranberry Thistle in downtown Jonesborough, the party featured soup beans, hoecakes, potato salad, macaroni salad, several desserts…sorry, you know the pregnant woman is only going to want to talk about the food. There was also a really great bluegrass band.
Representative Hill was unfortunately stuck in Nashville until 4 o’clock this afternoon due to a hold-up on SJR 127 (which did make it to the floor this afternoon – sort of). Hill was able, however, to address supporters via telephone and officially announced his bid for reelection.
I had a great time getting some political scoop from various and sundry unnamed sources. The crowd, however, was, by and large, average folks from the district. Although there were a few “political insiders” in the bunch, most were there just because they appreciate Matthew.
Once Hill’s campaign gets into full swing at the end of the legislative session (hopefully next week), you can expect updates from yours truly on the status of Hill’s bid. So far, thanks entirely to supporters and campaign staff, over 3000 homes have been visited on Hill’s behalf.

JAMA,
Did you ask Matthew if anybody has been fired at WHCB for broadcasting in Spanish??
I don’t understand why Matthew wants Jesus to be fired. After all, Jesus spoke in Aramaic, according to most scholars. Why is Matthew Hill against Jesus?? What if I spoke in Aramaic at work??
According to Matthew Hill, that’s an ok reason for firing me from my job.
Do you get any of this?

P.S.
Is there any reason Rep. Hill announced his reelection on International Worker’s Day??
Is he a pinko, fascist lover??
Huh?
Gary
P.S. Remember, Rep. Hill is one of the best war protestors around. I ought to know. I was there.
I love you Matthew, although your politics borders on something resembling the Taliban.
Just remember, nothing is personal with me. It’s all about politics, and I’m still distressed that Matthew would have Jesus fired from working in Tennessee…………………………………

Speaking of pregnant women, Candice is being induced tomorrow. She had a high bp reading today, and it is only precautionary. Keep her and Reagan in your prayers.

Gary, would you mind a quick post on Hill’s language/firing issue? You’re mentioning that he wants people fired for speaking a language other than English. What are the details? Or where can I find the details? Is this a bill he actually presented? Thx.

Here you go………..
All in Black and White…………..
As far as I’m concerned, Rep. Hill condemned Jesus because Jesus didn’t speak English……
Tell me where I’m wrong in this??

Almost forgot this one…………….

Gary,
Thanks for the link. I like the bill. Its the govt getting out of the way. It reinforces the right for two parties to enter into an agreed upon working relationship. “Wanna work fur me? Ya speak proper Anglish an we’ll get along jes fine.”
I’m not following the connection between Hill, Jesus, and Jose. It merely says the employer CAN specify that English be spoken during work activities.
BTW, I’m functionally bilingual. I could relocate to S. America and not really miss a beat. So, I’m not prejudiced against other languages. In fact, I find Spanish more appealing linguistically than English. And Portuguese is positively beautiful. As a homeschooling parent Spanish is certainly easier to teach than English.
Nothing in that bill smacks of the Taliban to me. In fact it makes me feel all warm and Libertariany.
My .02.
May 2, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Really Mark….
Then why don’t you ask Matthew Hill if he has fired anybody from WHCB for conducting broadcasts in Spanish. If you need that link, then I will get it for you.
Gary
P.S. By the way, this is a right to work state. You can hire and fire for no reason, so the bill is not even necessary.
May 2, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Mark,
Also, I have tapes from Matthew’s shows where he stated that he does not believe in the separation of church and state. That’s what the Taliban believe.
Sorry…
Gary

Gary,
The Taliban don’t believe in the separation of MOSQUE and State
I’m not seeing how the language issue is Taliban-ish.
A Spanish language broadcast is not incongruous when the target market is Spanish. If the customer base speaks a language, then the employee should speak the customers language.
In this case, I see no conflict of linguistic ideology.
Now when Hill starts growing a long, fuzzy beard I’ll be more concerned.
Anyway, on to bigger things:)
May 4, 2008 at 1:59 pm
The problem with no separation of church and state is that it establishes the principle that allows no separation of mosque and state. That’s what is so scary about Hill. He is clearly working to lay a foundation that would let this country be a theocracy.

Did you know abortion is a silly issue? Kent Williams thinks so.
May 4, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Jay,
Thank you. I happen to think that the issue of church and state is a very big thing and you obviously get it and “The Other Mark” does not.
Come on “The Other Mark”. Matthew Hill’s English only bill was just pandering to the voters. He often accused the Clintons of doing that. Now he’s doing. Appealing to people’s base instincts instead of their reason. Go figure. Do as I do and not as I say. What else is new in politics??

I seem to recall reading that there is not any actual medical procedure referred by the American Medical Association as “partial birth abortion”…so how does the Tennessee General Assembly seek to enact legislation lacking an essential element of the law (i.e. the correct name of the procedure to be outlawed rather than some boogeyman concept)?
And if Rep. Matthew Hill wasn’t such a dillweed, he would have tought a little ahead before he began running for the Tennessee House and attempted to secure himself a position on the Tennessee House committee where these bills are allegedly being “hung-up”…whatta putz!
Why is it that you can’t seem to nail Hill and other Northeast Tennessee republicans down regarding their positions toward the RU-486 abortion drug (too closely linked to Altace I would think)…?

[...] Jama Oliver reports that Rep. Matthew Hill’s reelection campaign kickoff hit a snag when the legislator had to stay in Nashville longer than anticipated due to the Capitol Hill Chaos set off when Rep. Bill Dunn tried to bring a controversial abortion resolution to the floor of the state house: Representative Hill was unfortunately stuck in Nashville until 4 o’clock this afternoon due to a hold-up on SJR 127 (which did make it to the floor this afternoon – sort of). Hill was able, however, to address supporters via telephone and officially announced his bid for reelection. [...]

Mark said….about the English Language Issue…
“Nothing in that bill smacks of the Taliban to me. In fact it makes me feel all warm and Libertariany.”
“The Taliban don’t believe in the separation of MOSQUE and State (that was an easy but weak joke…still makes me smile, though) I’m not seeing how the language issue is Taliban-ish.”
“In this case, I see no conflict of LINGUISTIC ideology.”
“Now when Hill starts growing a long, fuzzy beard I’ll be more concerned.”
Gary interprets the above as:
“you obviously get it and “The Other Mark” does not.”
Funny.

Yeah, you are right….
Why Matthew Hill wants to ban Jesus from working in Tennessee….
I believe that is what we were talking about….
It’s obvious Matthew has something against Jesus, because he would get fired if he worked in Tennessee if Matthew had his way….
Yep…………… that’s for sure…….
Anybody edited Wikipedia lately??
