I’ve thought that the Republican Party has been slightly out of touch for years, but I still held out hope that someone would notice and actually lead the party in a more conservative direction. With the current candidates running for president on the Republican ticket, however, I have decided that those on the national level are as clueless as ever. When are they going to figure out that conservatives (i.e., those of us who have now abandoned the title, “Republican,” out of sheer embarassment) do not want candidates who are just a hair away from being a Democrat? Moderate is not the answer!
Giuliani is even less of a conservative than President Bush. He might, MIGHT be considered something of a fiscal conservative, but still believes just a bit too much in the right of government to do everything for everyone. McCain is President Bush made over…what kind of choice would that be? A Democrat or Bush’s older, less attractive clone? Then there’s Mitt Romney who, unfortunately hasn’t been on the national front long enough to really make a name for himself, but seems like the rest of the pack – moderate. Fred Thompson is the champion of the conservatives in the Republican Party, but he still makes me a bit nervous with his unwavering support of the war.
May I remind you for what the Republican Party is supposed to stand? LESS government power; MORE individual freedom; LOWER taxes and LESS spending; States’ rights, not federal tyranny. I’m sad to say that it seems that the Republican Party is once again becoming the party of Abraham Lincoln. How much longer before the President decides that it is the right of the Federal government to dictate every last detail of our lives? What would happen if a state were to secede today?
Where are the true conservatives and when are they going to step up and take over the Republican Party? Polls are now showing that a mere 50% of Republicans are happy with the current presidential candidates. The number of Democrats happy with their choices is closer to 75%. Do you see a problem here? Unfortunately, the Republican Party has continued to move further and further toward the middle, rather than to the right where the majority of Republicans stand. And this, my friends, will get us defeated in ’08.

The Republican party is just that, what it is not is the Conservative party. Our party is just as diverse as the democrats. I will say that each of these candidates for president all have conservative characteristics. If you are looking for a David Davis in this line up it is not going to happen. Someone like that would have no shot in a state wide race especially not a national campaign. Our country is to moderate for that way of thinking. What about Mike Huckabee’s support of the Fair Tax i think he would be a great vp. Yes some have well lets say lost touch with the Conservative part of the party. If you look a Senator John Mccain he is one of the most proven conservative spenders on the ticket, however on social issues he is weak. Mitt Romney sounds the part today only to sound like a moderate republican only 2 years ago. Mayor Rudy socially could not be any further from the conservative base, but he is very strong on defense and the economy. Hunter is to unknown, but he is very strong on immigration reform. Sam Brownback a big candidate in the pro-life community is just that.. he has no real shot of becoming the man. These men all have their distinctions and the other candidates are so similar there is nothing to set them apart so I don’t see how they will be able to get the support. I am sure most of you know these facts about the candidates I am just simply trying to say all of these men are republicans and have at least some conservative principals. To me all of them have weaknesses that could easily be exploited in the general election. Unless Thompson gets in the race and i feel he will our party will not have our true “Ronald Reagon” per say. I am not suggesting leaving the fundamental things you believe in only to see the lesser of the two evils if it comes down to it.

Agreed. Except that U.S. David Davis is not a conservative repubelican, but actually a moderate repubelican (e.g. David Davis recently signed on to a pro-labor bill that would force Tennessee cities and counties to recognize union representation for public safety workers).
I think that how is the time for most Repubelicans to follow the 1864 example of President Abraham Lincoln and simply leave the Repubelican Party, like Lincoln did when he collaorated with Democrats such as Andrew Johnson to form the National Union Party.
AMEN!!!

Fred Thompson — please? What did he ever do while he was in Washington, D.C. as a U.S. Senator other than chase young tail?

The Republican party is… out of touch!
President Obama was elected by Independents, Reagan Democrats, Blue Dog Democrats, Republican in Name Only, Libertarians, etc. From my “Independent” perspective… the GOP stands for 1) De-Regulation of Business and 2) Regulation of Morality. The De-Regulation of Business removed consumer protections, rewarded job outsourcing and caused the economic collapse. Allowing Evangelical Christians to set the social agenda caused the “Separation of Church and State” divide over: school prayer, sex education, AIDS prevention, abortion rights, gay marriage, etc. Today the DEMS stand for working class jobs and common sense. Who knows, next election may be the opposite!
